Description: | DEPARTMENTAL PROJECT 3 FALL 2021 DEPARTMENT OF EXPLORATIVE ARCHITECTURE HOMORÓDSZENTPÁL INTRODUCTION The project site for the Departmental Project 3 of the autumn semester of 2021 is going to be in Homoródszentpál in Hargita County, Transylvania. The village with a couple of hundred inhabitants has a very nice location, but now it is impoverished. Once the village lay on the line of the Roman Limes, and despite being in the middle of present-day Romania, it is still in a peripheral position. In this special, multilayered world, we are going to explore the architectural issues and possibilities of recycling, remodelling and „healing” (reclaim). The specific design tasks will be different according to different situations and sites. The detailed elaboration of these tasks will be completed at the beginning of the semester, but one by one it will be a medium complexity, usually multifunctional and in any case eco- and energy-conscious buildings, which are trying to breathe new life into the life of the settlement. The scale will range from the infrastructure serving the future cycle path and the Transylvanian hiking trail to the industry 4.0 carpentry, but a school as a community space is also included in the list. The units on different plots may differ according to the programs finalized by the students, and the functional programs can be modified and combined. Analyzing the existing complex environment and understanding the connections is a very important part of the task. The floor area of the buildings to be planned is approximately 600 m2 net. The semester begins with a description of the design locations, followed by lectures detailing the broader context. CONTENT AND FORMAL REQUIREMENTS Concept design: - layout 1:1000 (with site analysis, can be team work as well) - presentation of building(s) of similar character as reference (3-4 A4 pages) - elaboration of the design program, presentation of function - scale-model, presentation of the basic design ideas (master plan, scheme function min. 1:500) Preliminary design I.: This design phase is already individual work, focusing on the development of the architectural form, of the relation between space and mass, of the relation with the surrounding, and of the interior functional system. - site plan M=1:500, 1000 - plans of the different levels, sections, elevations M=1:200 - perspective views, sketches, scale-model with surroundings Preliminary design II.: The same as Preliminary design I., but only in case of unsuccessful presentation, or upon request. Final project: At the end of the semester detailed 1:100 documentation has to be prepared. (simplified „program design”): - site plan at a scale of M=1:200, 500 with surroundings (buildings, garden, streets, walking ways, entrances, delivery entrances, flooring) - plans of all different levels with the name of the rooms marked 1:100 (exceptional case 1:200) - at least 2 different sections showing the structural solutions, dimensions 1:100 (exceptional case 1:200) - all facades with the used materials and 1:100 (exceptional case 1:200) - perspective view with the surrounding, street view, photomontage - Model min. scale M= 1:333 (paper, balsa wood, plexi) not obligatory in case of distance learning! Formal requirements: All drawings can be traditional hand- or CAD drawings or any other optional official scaled printed technique. Size, format, legend due to sample sheet given by the department. Beside the detailed documentation a compressed sheet of 59.4 x 178.2 cm of the project must be submitted as well. Submission is fulfilled with e-mail delivery, presentation is highly recommended, but not compulsory! The clear and correct technical presentation is important. A stable cover due to the plans dimensions with index is necessary. Models have to be submitted in boxes (in case allowed by measures due to COVID 19).The name and e-mail address of the author and the title of the project have to be marked on each plan, cover, model and box.
